The capital of Connecticut is Hartford, one of the oldest cities in the New England region. Founded by traders of Dutch decent back in the early 1600's, It was Reverend Thomas Hooker in 1636, that started a fort called the "House of Hope". Hartford now is the home of a wide range of treasures like the Wadsworth Atheneum (first in the nation to be free to the public). There is the Mark Twain House, the Bushnell Memorial, and the Hartford Stage. Because of this cities past in dealings with traders, Hartford has become the business capital with such companies as The Hartford Insurance Group and Aetna Insurance.

Connecticut is rich with history being one of the first states in the union. The Dutch first settled here along with the Puritans and Pilgrims. All lied claim to the region yet was very slow in settling down. In 1633, one single vessel sailed from Plymouth, with the intentions of building a trading house on the banks of Connecticut. When they reached the designated spot it was discovered the Dutch had arrived before them.

There were several attempts to settle in this beautiful state of Connecticut. Another one was in 1635 when the settlement of Wethersfield was started. This attempt was officially the first one, but others claimed to differ. The next settlement was at the Plymouth trading-house in 1635. It was given the name of Windsor. Before you know it, three settlements had been established, Hartford, Windsor, and Wethersfield.

The Indian troubles began when the Pequot War started in 1637, which in turn was the demise of the Pequot Indian Camp and massive destruction of many Indians by the white settlers. At the end of all this, a man by the name of George Fenwick, in 1639, arrived on the scene to take over the colony.
